Getting to Krabi by air

Due to the distance between the two cities, Bangkok to Krabi flights seems like the most sensible option and you shouldn’t have any difficulty finding them; several domestic airlines have regular schedules operating between the two locations each day. Airlines covering the route include, Bangkok Airways, Thai Airways, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air. The average cost of a one-way ticket is 2,500 baht but there are often cheap flights to be had for as little as 1,700 baht. The flight time from Bangkok to Krabi is on average 1 hour and 30 minutes. You need to check in for your flight at least 1 hour before take-off and most check in desks close 40 minutes prior to take-off. It’s important to note that at peak travel times it can take up to two hours to reach Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport from riverside Bangkok hotels, so you need to allow yourself plenty of time to catch your flight.

Krabi Airport is located on the main highway Route 4, approximately 9km from Krabi Town centre; 27km from Ao Nang Beach and 70km from Koh Lanta. There are fast and easy transport connections from the airport to anywhere in the province. Krabi Airport GPS coordinates: N 8.097003, E 98.978398.

Getting to Krabi by train

Technically there is no such thing as a Bangkok to Krabi train, as Krabi doesn’t have a railway station. If you are travelling by train you need to board at Hualamphong station in Bangkok, and alight at Surat Thani station. From here you can travel by shuttle to the bus station in Surat Thani, and then by bus the remainder of the way to Krabi.

Hualamphong station itself is very busy, it caters for approximately 60,000 passengers each day. You need to make sure that you have plenty of time to book your tickets and catch your train. You can book a combined train and bus ticket at the station, which is valid all the way to Krabi. If you’re booking your ticket on the day of travel, or the preceding day, you can make your purchase at the ticket counters under the red/orange/green screens. If you need to make an advance booking you should head towards the platform area and look for the advance booking office on the right hand side.

As we’ve already mentioned, it’s not the Bangkok to Krabi train that you’re booking a ticket for, but the train to Surat Thani and a bus ticket for the remainder of the journey. Trains to Surat Thani leave during the day and in the evening. The daytime express trains take approximately 8 hours 45 minutes to reach their destination. You can book second class seats on this air conditioned service and meals are included. The sleeper train takes approximately 11 hours 45 minutes to reach Surat Thani but you do have the benefit of being able to book a 1st class sleeper ticket for approximately 1,500 baht, or a 2nd class sleeper ticket for approximately 960 baht. Once you reach Surat Thani bus station you board an air conditioned bus for the three hour journey to Krabi.

Getting to Krabi by bus

It is possible to travel all the way from Bangkok to Krabi by bus. Air conditioned buses leave the Southern Bus Terminal in the evening, and take approximately 11 hours to reach Krabi. The Southern Bus Terminal, also known as Sai Tai Mai, can be difficult to reach from Bangkok centre. The only easy way to get there from the old town is by taxi which costs around 120 baht. There are local buses from areas such as Sukhumvit which cost just a few baht. If you are travelling by bus from Bangkok to Krabi you can expect the journey to cost around 920 baht.

From the Airport to town by bus

Car hire and driving. International firms such as National, Avis and Budget have booths in the arrival hall of both terminal buildings. You can pre-book online for better rates.

From the Airport to town by taxi

Car hire and driving. Krabi Airport taxis and airport bus. All of the airport taxis offer pre-paid, fixed rate fares only; you must buy a coupon from one of the booths inside the terminals before finding a driver outside. There is also an official airport bus service, serving destinations in Ao Nang and Krabi Town only. Prices from 90 baht – 150 baht per person; buses leave 5 times daily, or when there are enough passengers to fill them. Tickets can be bought in the arrival hall, at the same booths as the taxi coupons.

From Krabi to Ao-Nang

Ao-Nang GPS coordinates: N 8.031216, E 98.822138. Ao-Nang is located around 20km from Krabi Town and 25km from the airport. A taxi to / from Krabi airport will take approximately 30 minutes and cost 600 Baht for a car (max 4 persons) or 1000 Baht for a minibus. There is also a (slower) airport bus service, which is charged at 150 Baht per person one way.

From Krabi Town (where most bus services from other places in Thailand will terminate), there is a local bus service, or taxi service to Ao Nang. Count 15 – 20 minutes by car, or twice as long for the bus.

There are direct passenger ferry connections to Ao Nang (Nopparat Thara Pier) from the islands of Phi Phi and Lanta, as well as Phuket and Koh Yao Noi / Yai (Lanta and Koh Yao during November to April only). Longtail taxi boats run from here to Railay and Ton Sai, up to around 11pm during high season and daytimes only in low season (unless specially chartered). Longtail boats can also be chartered year round from the beach for island-hopping excursions.
